Rivers political crisis worsens as pro-Wike lawmakers set traps for Governor Fubara, seeking grounds for impeachment. Analyst Mahmud Jega reveals the only obstacle standing in their way. Read full details.
The political crisis in Rivers State has taken a new turn as former presidential appointee and political analyst, Mahmud Jega, has revealed that the only obstacle preventing the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara is the Chief Judge of the state, Simeon Amadi.
Jega made this revelation while speaking on Arise Television, analyzing the power tussle between the Rivers State Governor and lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
According to Jega, pro-Wike lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly are deliberately setting traps for Governor Fubara, searching for a justifiable reason to initiate impeachment proceedings against him.
The political analyst emphasized that the Chief Judge remains the only stumbling block between the Assembly and its alleged plan to remove the governor. He further alleged that the lawmakers are now targeting Justice Amadi, following his refusal to cooperate with their agenda.
“The Rivers State Assembly members are loyal to Wike and bent on impeaching Fubara. The lawmakers are setting traps for the governor, waiting for him to commit an impeachable offense. Their only obstacle is the Chief Judge of Rivers, who they are now going after,” Jega disclosed.
The development follows heightened tensions in the state, with Governor Fubara and a faction of the Assembly locked in a bitter struggle for political supremacy.
Over the weekend, Wike claimed he had no intention of stopping the state Assembly from performing its constitutional duties. However, there are strong speculations that his loyalists in the legislature are working tirelessly to orchestrate Fubara’s removal.
The 27 pro-Wike lawmakers, led by Martin Amaewhule, recently secured a Supreme Court victory, which reaffirmed their positions and mandated them to resume their legislative functions.
Tensions escalated further when the lawmakers recently locked out Governor Fubara from the Assembly complex during his attempt to re-present the 2025 budget. The lawmakers justified their action by claiming they were not adequately informed of his visit.
As the political storm intensifies, reports indicate that the Assembly has launched an investigation into Chief Judge Simeon Amadi over alleged age falsification – a move widely seen as a retaliation for his stance against the impeachment plot.
With the battle lines drawn, the coming days will determine whether the pro-Wike lawmakers will succeed in their mission or if Governor Fubara will outmaneuver his political adversaries.
