Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to equitable development as he flagged off the reconstruction of the 11.27-kilometre Mbala-Umuaku-Ngodo Road in Umunneochi Local Government Area.
The flag-off event, held at Ngodo-Umuada Junction on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, marked a significant milestone in Governor Otti’s infrastructural agenda aimed at fostering economic growth, boosting security, and enhancing connectivity in Abia State.
Governor Otti emphasized that Umunneochi holds a strategic position in Abia State due to its rich agricultural potential, geographical location, and historic contributions to the state’s socioeconomic progress. He assured the people that the road reconstruction is just the beginning of a broader transformation plan.
He lauded the resilience and unity of the people of Umunneochi in confronting past security challenges and reaffirmed his government’s dedication to ensuring that no part of Abia State is left behind in infrastructural and economic development.
“The reconstruction of this road will not only enhance transportation but also stimulate commerce, facilitate access to farmlands, and improve the overall quality of life in this region,” Governor Otti stated.
Acknowledging the security challenges that once plagued Umunneochi, Governor Otti praised the community’s cooperation with security agencies, which played a pivotal role in restoring peace to the area. He noted that his administration’s swift and strategic intervention since mid-2023 has significantly reduced criminal activities, allowing residents to rebuild their lives and businesses.
“We have successfully reclaimed this land from criminal elements. Now, it’s time to shift our focus to development and economic empowerment,” he declared.
In a landmark announcement, Governor Otti revealed that Umunneochi has been selected as one of three locations for a multi-billion naira agro-industrial processing facility. This initiative, he explained, is part of his government’s strategy to transform agriculture from subsistence farming to a structured and profitable industry.
The facility will be dedicated to the production, aggregation, and processing of export-quality agricultural commodities such as cashew and other cash crops cultivated in the region. It will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, including an independent energy ecosystem, and will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
“This project will revolutionize the agricultural value chain in Abia, ensuring that farmers earn more from their produce through value addition, rather than just primary production,” the Governor said.
Governor Otti also disclosed plans to maximize the economic potential of Umunneochi’s livestock market and solid mineral deposits. His administration will work with investor groups to establish a robust hub of legitimate economic activities that will generate wealth and job opportunities for young people in the region.
“The era of just extracting raw materials without adding value is over. We will ensure that every resource mined or cultivated in Umunneochi benefits the people first,” he asserted.
Governor Otti highlighted ongoing efforts under Project Ekwueme, a special intervention initiative aimed at retrofitting primary healthcare facilities in the local government. Additionally, several primary and secondary schools in Umunneochi will be remodeled under the AbiaFirst Education Transformation Programme to provide a world-class learning environment for students.
Other infrastructure plans include developing production-support infrastructure in various communities to improve economic productivity and bridge the urban-rural development gap.
The Governor called on traditional rulers, town union leaders, and residents to take ownership of the ongoing development projects. He encouraged them to actively monitor the quality of work being done and report any concerns to the Ministry of Works.
Furthermore, he reminded residents that development is tied to funding and urged them to be regular in the payment of taxes and levies, assuring that his administration will transparently utilize every penny for the state’s growth.
Governor Otti assured the people of Umunneochi that the road project, spearheaded by the Honourable Commissioner for Works, Engr. Don Otumchere Oti, will be completed within the next 12 months, with timely payments to contractors.
“We are not just building roads; we are connecting communities, spreading prosperity, and creating opportunities for a better future,” Governor Otti concluded.
