… Governor Peter Mbah breaks silence on defection rumours, speaks on party crisis, political future, and Edeoga’s return
Amid widespread speculations of an impending defection, Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has firmly declared his commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), putting to rest rumours of a potential move to another political platform.
Speaking during a high-level interactive session with the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) held on Saturday in Enugu, the governor said unequivocally:
“I am still in the PDP. As you can see, the flag behind me is that of the PDP.”
This public affirmation comes amid growing defections across the country, intra-party discontent, and fears that Governor Mbah may join the ranks of aggrieved politicians eyeing alternative platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Peter Mbah: PDP May Have Issues, But I’m Not Leaving
Governor Mbah did not shy away from acknowledging the internal challenges rocking the PDP, both at state and national levels. However, he argued that no political party in Nigeria is immune to crisis, insisting that the PDP remains his political home.
“Yes, there are challenges in PDP, but those aren’t exclusive to this party. The entire political system in Nigeria is under pressure, but PDP will overcome.”
This statement is viewed as a strategic attempt to reassure party loyalists, especially following intensified rumours of alignments between Mbah and powerful APC elements at the federal level.
Edeoga Returns to PDP: From Courtroom to Cooperation
Perhaps the most shocking revelation of the day was Peter Mbah’s disclosure that his former 2023 governorship rival and Labour Party candidate, Barr. Chijioke Edeoga, had returned to the PDP and was now working with him to “move Enugu forward.”
This marks a dramatic twist in Enugu politics, as Edeoga was until recently locked in a bitter post-election legal battle with Mbah, contesting the legitimacy of the PDP’s victory.
“My brother, Chijioke Edeoga, has since returned to the PDP. We’re both committed to the growth of our dear state. That’s what matters now,” Mbah told editors.
This development, if confirmed, could signal a political reconciliation of monumental proportions in Enugu State—one that may reshape the 2027 political landscape.
Independent Candidacy Not Recognised — Mbah Clarifies
Responding to questions about the growing clamor for independent candidacy in Nigeria, Mbah stated clearly that the current constitution does not permit any Nigerian to contest elections independently.
“You must still do politics, no matter how technocratic you wish to be. That’s the system we operate. The constitution doesn’t allow independent candidacy.”
This position is particularly relevant amid rising youth advocacy for constitutional reforms, especially those who believe Nigeria’s electoral framework limits genuine alternatives.
Governance, Not Politics, Is Our Focus — Peter Mbah
Peter Mbah emphasized that he remains focused on governance and service delivery, noting that his administration has chosen not to be distracted by politics.
“The people of Enugu elected us to serve, and that’s what we are doing. At the end of the day, it is up to them to decide whether to renew our mandate or not.”
Observers believe this statement is a subtle nudge toward 2027, hinting that Mbah may seek re-election but on the strength of performance rather than politics.
