The PDP has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of orchestrating a smear campaign against former Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel, using false corruption allegations. Read more about the political face-off.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the alarm over what it describes as a calculated plot by Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to tarnish the reputation of former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel. The opposition party alleges that Akpabio has mobilized a section of the media to propagate false corruption allegations against Emmanuel in a bid to discredit the PDP.
In a statement signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the party accused Akpabio of spearheading a well-coordinated smear campaign designed to manipulate public perception by peddling fictitious figures and misleading claims of an indictment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). According to the PDP, this latest ploy is part of a broader strategy by Akpabio to politically undermine his successor and create an artificial scandal where none exists.
The PDP insists that Nigerians have seen through Akpabio’s alleged machinations, stressing that Udom Emmanuel’s track record as governor remains untainted. The party highlighted that Emmanuel served meritoriously, managing Akwa Ibom’s resources with transparency, prudence, and an unwavering commitment to public service. His tenure, the PDP asserts, was marked by massive infrastructural development, economic empowerment, and human capital advancement across critical sectors such as aviation, manufacturing, education, healthcare, power, and housing.
The opposition party urged Akpabio to abandon his “unholy enterprise” and focus on pressing issues within the National Assembly instead of attempting to drag Emmanuel’s name into a fabricated corruption scandal.
Accusing Akpabio of employing diversionary tactics, the PDP warned that no amount of falsehood or political maneuvering would erase Emmanuel’s legacy of good governance in Akwa Ibom. The party also challenged Akpabio to concentrate on addressing the controversies surrounding his leadership in the National Assembly rather than engaging in what it described as a desperate smear campaign.
The statement further reiterated the PDP’s commitment to exposing any attempt to manipulate the media for political witch-hunting while reaffirming its confidence in Udom Emmanuel’s unblemished record.
