In a move that has sent shockwaves through Abia’s political landscape, Governor Alex Otti has told his supporters that he will consult with God before making a decision on contesting the 2027 gubernatorial election.

Speaking at the Sam Ihesiulor Stadium, Okpuala Ngwa, during a grand civic reception organized by the Oha Isiala Ngwa People of Isiala Ngwa North and South, Governor Otti openly acknowledged the numerous calls for him to seek reelection, but stressed that the ultimate decision lies in divine hands.

“Just like 2023 was in the hands of God, 2027 will also be in the hands of God,” Otti declared to a massive crowd of political stakeholders, traditional rulers, party loyalists, and ordinary citizens. “So while I thank you for this endorsement, I would go back and consult with my God. My response will be made public when the time is right.”

This carefully measured response comes amid growing speculation that the Labour Party strongman may be gearing up for a second term, fueled by widespread praise of his development strides across the state—especially in Isiala Ngwa, where roads, healthcare, and educational infrastructure are reportedly undergoing major transformation.

Governor Otti used the platform to restate his administration’s economic blueprint, revealing why his government has placed priority on developing Aba, the commercial nerve centre of the state.

“Our concentration on Aba is because we do know that Aba has the capacity to generate revenue for us to develop other parts of the State. Aba occupies a prime place in our strategy,” the Governor explained.

He also reaffirmed that the controversial siting of the proposed Abia Airport at Nsulu was based on technical assessments and not politics. “We are not just building an airport. We are building an Airport City—with hotels, shopping plazas, and even a Nigerian Air Force base,” he said. “And yes, we have paid 100% compensation to all affected landowners. If anyone hasn’t received theirs, they should check their bank details.”

In a politically charged atmosphere, Otti welcomed defectors from the PDP, Accord Party, and the NURTW, all of whom declared support for his administration and the Labour Party.

Meanwhile, top lawmakers including Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, and Hon. Collins Iheonunekwu, unequivocally endorsed the Governor for a second term, declaring that “there is no vacancy in Government House, Umuahia, until 2031.”

Also speaking at the occasion, diaspora leaders such as Dr. Ugochukwu Agu of the Ngwa National Association in the USA and Canada expressed satisfaction with Otti’s strides in education and infrastructure. He announced scholarship and skills acquisition programs launched by the Ngwa community to align with the Governor’s development agenda.

The day-long civic reception attracted thousands from both LGAs and beyond, painting a picture of growing grassroots support for Otti. However, his refusal to commit to a 2027 ambition has introduced a wave of suspense into the state’s political scene.

One thing is clear: while others are planning strategies, Governor Otti is waiting on divine direction. And in Abia politics, that could change everything.
