Otti Launches Massive Power Expansion in Umuahia: Why Abia Says It Is Ready for Industrial Takeoff

Abia State recorded another major developmental milestone on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, as Governor Alex C. Otti, OFR, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for a massive power expansion project in Umuahia — a project he described as “a decisive step toward the State’s economic rebirth.”

The event, held at the Ogurube Government Station Layout, marked the commencement of the construction of a 7.5MVA injection substation, 1km of 33KV line, 1.2km of 11KV line, 2km of low-tension network, and the installation of two 300KVA distribution substations, all designed to significantly strengthen power supply within Umuahia Metropolis.

Governor Otti expressed gratitude to the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) for choosing Abia for this strategic investment, applauding its leadership role in stabilizing power supply nationwide. He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for liberalizing the electricity market through the 2023 Electricity Act, which empowered States to drive independent reforms.

According to the Governor, consistent electricity is the backbone of economic growth, industrial expansion, job creation and social prosperity. He emphasized that Abia’s development agenda is rooted in a robust, reliable and accessible energy framework.

To reinforce the project’s impact, Governor Otti announced that the State Government has matched the NDPHC’s 7.5MVA installation with an additional 7.5MVA, bringing the total capacity to 15MVA — a scale he described as essential to meet Umuahia’s present and future electricity demands.

He noted that Abia has implemented deep energy-sector reforms, including the establishment of the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority (ASERA) and the acquisition of critical distribution infrastructure across the State. These reforms, he said, are ensuring transparency, investor protection and sustainability within the electricity value chain.

Otti highlighted that progress made in the Aba ring-fenced electricity corridor, increased meter distribution and improved supply patterns demonstrate that Abia is fast becoming one of Nigeria’s most attractive energy hubs. He reaffirmed his belief that electricity is a right, not a privilege reserved for the wealthy.

The Governor used the platform to invite local and international investors, announcing that the State has already put in place the legal, regulatory and operational frameworks to support private-sector participation in electricity production, transmission and distribution.

He assured that the Abia Government will deploy every necessary support to ensure timely completion of the project, describing it as a practical vote of confidence in the State’s reforms and a key contributor to Nigeria’s broader economic advancement.

The event ended with strong assurances from Governor Otti that Abia is firmly on the path to becoming a modern, energy-driven economy where industries thrive, jobs multiply and communities prosper.
