Otisi Ukiwe breaks silence on Governor Otti’s performance and 2027 prospects. Read the full story to see his verdict on Abia’s transformation.
As Governor Alex Otti marks two years in office, voices across Abia State continue to weigh in on the impact and direction of his administration. One of such voices is Otisi Enyinnaya Ukiwe, a former governorship aspirant under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who brings a unique perspective as both a political stakeholder and policy advocate.

In this exclusive interview with All Facts Newspaper, Otisi Enyinnaya Ukiwe assesses Otti’s performance, speaks on policy implementation, and hints at his future political intentions as 2027 draws nearer. He commends the Governor’s reforms in infrastructure, transparency, and sectoral development, while also offering candid recommendations for the road ahead.
- Two years into Governor Alex Otti’s administration, how would you describe the overall impact of his leadership on Abia State?
Governor Alex Otti’s leadership has had a decidedly positive impact on Abia State. Two years into his administration, the state has witnessed remarkable progress across critical sectors, underscoring his commitment to infrastructure, economic development, and social welfare. Under his stewardship, Abia State has made significant strides in areas such as education, healthcare, security, agriculture, and sports. His emphasis on sustainable development and public well-being continues to shape a forward-looking and inclusive growth trajectory for the state.
- In your opinion, has Governor Otti met the expectations of Abians who voted him into office?
His Excellency has met the expectations of those who voted him into office—and evidently, even those who did not—judging by the significant number of party defections. However, it must be emphasized that these expectations should always have been the bare minimum for anyone entrusted with the responsibility of governing our dear Abia State.
- How would you assess his approach to governance, especially in terms of public sector reform, transparency, and accountability?
His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti has demonstrated exceptional leadership through a pragmatic and visionary approach to governance. By appointing qualified individuals to roles that align with their skills and expertise—putting round pegs in round holes—he has catalyzed a remarkable acceleration in infrastructure development across the state.
His monthly media chats reflect a strong commitment to transparency and community engagement, ensuring that citizens remain informed and involved in governance. Moreover, Dr. Otti’s dedication to public sector reform is evident in his merit-based appointments, prioritizing competence over state of origin—an uncommon but commendable practice.
I am particularly impressed by his emphasis on transparency and accountability. The Open Infrastructure Portal, which publishes real-time data on project progress, contractor details, and quarterly expenditure audits, stands as a landmark initiative. It significantly demystifies public spending and fosters trust by eliminating the opacity traditionally associated with state governance.
- Governor Otti has initiated and completed several road and urban renewal projects. How would you rate the impact of these infrastructural developments on the lives of ordinary Abians?
The impact of these projects on the lives of ordinary Abians has been overwhelmingly positive. Property values have increased significantly, while initiatives like the refurbishment of schools and hospitals have greatly enhanced the overall quality of life. Additionally, the improved road network has facilitated smoother transportation of food, goods, and services, making daily commutes easier and more efficient for the average citizen.
- As a former governorship aspirant ( Otisi Enyinnaya Ukiwe ) and a stakeholder in the Abia Project, would you say Governor Otti is implementing any of the ideas or policies you once championed?
Certainly. If you look back at my published manifesto, you will see that some key initiatives include the following:
- Opening up the private sector by de-risking key industries, such as the garment and textiles sector.
- Improving the ease of doing business in Abia State.
- Leading reforms in education and healthcare.
- Ensuring timely salary payments and advancing infrastructure development.
- Looking ahead, what specific areas should Governor Otti prioritize in the remaining years of his first term?
I respectfully recommend that His Excellency consider prioritizing the following key areas:
Security: Strengthen police-community relations to address ongoing challenges in law enforcement and public trust.
Capital Investment: Promote investment in industries to stimulate economic growth and attract both local and international investors.
Human Capital Development: Invest in training and skills acquisition in sectors such as agriculture, real estate, vocational trades, and textiles.
Legislative Support: Collaborate with the House of Assembly to enact laws that safeguard lives and property across the state.
- As the political atmosphere for 2027 begins to take shape, do you intend to contest for governor again or will you support Governor Alex Otti for a second term?
No definitive decision has yet been made regarding any gubernatorial ambitions. However, what is certain is that a healthy democratic process is strengthened when credible challengers emerge—even for an incumbent like His Excellency. Such competition not only reinforces democratic values but also motivates the incumbent to consistently deliver his best for the people of Abia State.
More importantly, the ideal candidate to contest against His Excellency should be someone committed to building on the progress already made—enhancing the foundation he has laid. Abia State still has considerable strides to make in reaching global standards in quality of life, infrastructure, and security. The continuity of good governance and visionary leadership is essential to achieving that goal.
- Should Abians expect to see you return to the political arena in any capacity?
Serving Abia State in any political role would be a profound honour and an opportunity to help shape a brighter future for our people.
- Finally, what message would you like to share with the people of Abia State and with Governor Alex Otti as he marks two years in office?
My message to the good people of Abia State is simple: it is time for all hands to be on deck. Let us stand together to support His Excellency in building a better Abia. We must not only ensure he has the resources required to succeed, but also the encouragement to stay the course and deepen the progress already made.
To His Excellency, I say this: what you have begun is a solid foundation—an important first step toward projecting Abia into a future of true greatness. This is only the beginning. I am confident that under your leadership, Abia will rise, and your efforts will earn a place in history alongside the legacy of the great Dr. Michael Okpara.
