Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has publicly honored the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Prof. Mrs. Nnenna Oti, for her unwavering integrity during the 2023 general elections in Abia State. Governor Otti made this commendation on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the wedding of Prof. Oti’s daughter, Dr. Onyinyechi Orieoma, to Engr. Ugochukwu Peter. The event took place at Rt. Hon. Iduma Igariwey Enwo’s Event Center, Ozara Mgbom village in Afikpo LGA of Ebonyi State.
During his speech, Governor Otti praised Prof. Nnenna Oti for her steadfastness in the face of immense pressure while serving as the Returning Officer for Abia State in the 2023 elections. He attributed his victory at the polls to her commitment to fairness and justice.
“In 2023, sometime in March, God decided to complete a job He started in 2015. I was somewhere when I received a message that Professor Nnennaya Oti had been appointed as the Returning Officer for Abia State. Of course, I had known her name, but we had never met,” Governor Otti recalled.
He narrated how, upon learning about her appointment, he left everything in God’s hands. Despite facing intense pressure, Prof. Oti stood her ground and upheld the principles of fairness, ensuring that the will of Abia people prevailed.
“And when she came, she did something extraordinary. All the pressure that was mounted on her, she turned down, and she did the right thing,” Governor Otti declared.
The Governor stressed that Prof. Oti’s courageous decision should not go unnoticed.
“I want to use this platform to recognize her and thank her for what she did for the people of Abia. I believe it was more of what she did for God, because she followed her conscience; if she had not, I wouldn’t be here today,” he stated.
Governor Otti extended his heartfelt congratulations to the newlywed couple and their families, expressing gratitude for being part of their joyous celebration. In a lighthearted yet meaningful remark, he advised the bride on maintaining a happy home, citing an inspiring anecdote about her mother.
“I was touched when my sister confessed that she still cooks for her husband, even as a professor and vice chancellor. There is no better lesson in marriage than that,” he said, drawing applause from the audience.
The wedding ceremony was graced by several high-profile dignitaries, including former Senate President, H.E. Sen. Dr. Ken Nnamani; former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika Onyeabor; and Hon. Uche Nwosu.
Governor Otti was accompanied by members of his cabinet, including the Honourable Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday; Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Hon. Kingsley Nwokocha; Special Adviser on Security, Commander MacDonald Ubah; and Special Adviser on Trade and Commerce, Chief Nwaka Inem.
The presence of these notable personalities underscored the significance of the event and the high regard in which Prof. Oti is held.
