Ohanaeze Ndigbo calls on President Tinubu to release IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, urging unity and justice during his South-East visit. The group lauds regional leaders for developmental strides in Enugu and Imo states.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization of the Igbo, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to secure a lasting legacy by ordering the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This appeal was made ahead of Tinubu’s official visit to Enugu State.
Speaking on Friday, Nze Ozichukwu Fidelis Chukwu, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, lauded the Federal Government’s perceived shift in attitude toward the Igbo nation under Tinubu’s leadership. Highlighting this change, Chukwu urged Tinubu to demonstrate his commitment to justice and national unity by releasing Kanu.
Chukwu stated, “It is hoped that with this visit, President Tinubu will write his name in gold in the hearts of Ndigbo and all well-meaning Nigerians if he orders the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”
Ohanaeze commended Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State for his “disruptive, innovative, and massive infrastructural developments,” including the Enugu International Conference Centre, Smart Schools across electoral wards, hospital upgrades, and road construction. These projects, they said, are reshaping the state’s socio-economic landscape.
The group also applauded Senator Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, for his efforts in equipping the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport with night-landing equipment, describing it as a “life-saving” initiative.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasized the importance of Tinubu’s visit in fostering unity and rebuilding trust with the South-East. They expressed optimism that the president’s engagements in Enugu would mark a new chapter in Igbo-Federal relations.
“President Tinubu’s visit symbolizes a significant moment for Ndigbo. We trust that he will recognize this opportunity to strengthen national unity and equity,” the statement added.
