— LP Reps call Abure an impostor, accuse him of destroying the party instead of building it

The internal crisis rocking the Labour Party (LP) has taken a new twist as lawmakers elected on the party’s platform have launched a scathing attack on embattled former National Chairman, Julius Abure, over what they described as “fake suspensions” targeted at prominent figures in the party.
In a statement released on Thursday, the lawmakers, led by Afam Ogene, the LP caucus leader in the House of Representatives, described Abure as a “shameless impostor” whose desperation to remain relevant is plunging the party deeper into chaos.
The lawmakers were reacting to the recent indefinite suspension announced by Abure’s faction against key party leaders including Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Darlington Nwokocha, Afam Ogene himself, Amobi Ogah, and Seyi Sowunmi.
But the lawmakers insist that Abure no longer has the moral or legal authority to suspend anyone, especially after the Supreme Court ruled that the Court of Appeal lacked jurisdiction to affirm him as LP National Chairman.
“Abure’s latest antics are laughable,” the statement read. “This is a man who presided over a party in decline, who failed to bring in any notable figure since the 2023 elections, now pretending to cleanse the house he has helped destroy.”
They accused Abure of choosing to tear the party apart rather than strengthen it for future elections.
“It’s utterly absurd that Abure, who failed to demonstrate moral integrity during his tenure, now claims the authority to sanction party leaders,” the lawmakers said. “Only in Abure’s distorted reality can those with questionable character judge others.”
They described his continued media rounds and pronouncements as “press boy antics,” questioning why a supposed national chairman is more interested in drama than democratic development.
“Which self-respecting national chairman of a political party busies himself running around media houses like a press boy?” they asked.
According to them, the so-called suspension of Ogene and others is null and void, as it lacks legitimacy and serves only to massage Abure’s bruised ego.
“Abure’s faction announced Ogene’s removal as caucus leader, which fell flat. Now he’s inventing suspension orders to intimidate and stay relevant,” the lawmakers added.
They challenged the embattled former chairman to name even one influential personality he has attracted to the Labour Party since the 2023 general elections.
“From Kogi to Bayelsa, Ondo to Edo, what Abure has done is lead the Party to disastrous outcomes. Instead of healing, he’s widening the cracks.”
Meanwhile, Governor Alex Otti has called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest Abure over what he described as “impersonation.” This move adds another layer of controversy to the crisis, signaling the determination of the Obi-Otti-backed faction to wrest full control of the party’s structure.
The Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee, which enjoys the support of both Peter Obi and Governor Otti, has maintained that Abure no longer holds any legitimate authority in the party and has vowed to reposition LP ahead of future elections.
As the party’s crisis deepens, Nigerians and political observers are left to wonder whether the Labour Party can recover from this leadership implosion or whether the “Obidient” movement that surged in 2023 will become a casualty of internal sabotage.
