The Abia State Ministry of Trade and Commerce has strongly refuted viral reports alleging that the Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Mr. Kingsley Nwokocha, narrowly escaped lynching during a visit to Ariaria International Market. The Ministry described the claim as “false, exaggerated, and misleading,” urging the public to disregard the misinformation.
Contrary to the sensational reports circulating on various online platforms, the Ministry clarified that the Commissioner’s visit on Thursday, April 3, 2025, was a pre-scheduled engagement with the Ariaria International Market executives. The purpose of the visit was to update traders on the progress of the ongoing Ariaria Market remodelling project, spearheaded by Governor Alex Otti’s administration, aimed at transforming the market into a world-class commercial hub.
What Really Happened?
While it is true that some traders raised concerns over unresolved issues from previous administrations, the meeting was largely peaceful. However, a small group of misinformed individuals attempted to disrupt the session with chants and provocation.
At no point was the Commissioner physically attacked or in imminent danger. His security detail acted professionally to maintain order and ensure the safety of everyone present, including the Ministry’s management team.
Government’s Response to the False Report
The Ministry condemned the viral falsehood, describing it as a deliberate attempt to undermine the state government’s genuine efforts in improving the market infrastructure.
“The spread of false information is not only irresponsible but also counterproductive to the progress we are collectively striving to achieve,” the statement read. “The Ariaria International Market remodelling project is a flagship initiative aimed at enhancing business operations, and the government remains committed to ensuring its success through open dialogue with stakeholders.”
The Ministry urged traders and the public to verify information before spreading it, as fake news poses a significant threat to stability and public trust.
Call for Stakeholder Engagement
Reiterating its commitment to transparency and inclusivity, the Ministry assured market stakeholders that all genuine concerns would be addressed through appropriate channels. It encouraged traders to continue engaging with the government for the successful execution of the project, rather than being swayed by misleading narratives.
The Commissioner, Mr. Kingsley Nwokocha, also reassured traders that the government remains focused on policies that will elevate Ariaria International Market to a global standard, ensuring better business opportunities and infrastructure. SEE PHOTOS OF THE INTERACTION:
