Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, boasts a staggering population of over 200 million people, with a remarkable 70% of this number comprising youths under 30 years. It is my belief that this age demographic is an advantage to our country since it is possible to constructively harness these latent potential youth energies to massively develop Nigeria.
To achieve this objective, we must quickly innovate and adopt an educational policy that encourages speedy acquisition of skills by our youths in such emerging technologies as AI, Data Science and Cyber security. With the aim of making them proficient in the use of digital tools and platforms to access global markets, networks and resources, Nigerian youths can be empowered with ICT skills that will enable them to become relevant in the global market space even from the comfort of their remote areas back home.
By rejigging our education policy this way, it is possible to achieve the much needed departure from the current white collar job mentality, which only turns graduates into job seekers rather than job creators. Since it is common knowledge that Nigerian youths qualify as some of the most industrious hardworking young people globally, equipping them early with the entrepreneurial mindset will definitely add substantial value to the nation.
Therefore, to facilitate this critical intervention, governments at all levels in Nigeria should commit to creating the required enabling environment by providing regular power supply, high-speed internet, data centers, and digital hubs to support youth innovation. These efforts will complement the suggested new education policy that encourages students, in both formal and informal sectors, to acquire ICT skills.
The task of positioning the Nigerian youths as drivers of the economy is achievable when all critical Stakeholders, such as
the government, private sector, and civil society network together to unlock the potentials of this dominant youthful demographic. The South East entrepreneurial training module that encourages acquisition of business skills through apprenticeship could be developed by human resource professionals and subsequently adopted on a national scale.
In conclusion, Nigeria’s youth demographic is a valuable asset that can be harnessed for national advantage. By channeling their energies into emerging technologies and providing the necessary support and infrastructure, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and future generations. Let us work together to shape the destiny of our great nation.
