NDE Set To Tackling Youth Unemployment In Nigeria ― DG

The Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Dr Nasiru Ladan, says his organisation is committed to tackling youth unemployment.

This, he said, would be achieved through the training of youths in various vocations that would make them be self-reliant.

Ladan stated this in Ibadan, on Thursday, at a one-day orientation programme marking the commencement of a three-month intensive vocational skills training under the Basic National Open Apprenticeship Scheme (B-NOAS).

The director-general, who was represented by Mrs Christy Olowogbemi, a director, said no effort would be spared under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in bringing the nation’s unemployment scourge under control.

He said the training was aimed at facilitating the generation of employment opportunities for youths across the country through skills acquisition

“The training would equip the youths better for future challenges and more importantly keep them busy so that frustration and criminal tendencies do not intrude into their subconscious mind.” he said.

Ladan, therefore admonished the beneficiaries to give due seriousness and commitment to their future by adopting discipline in the course of the training.

Earlier, the State Coordinator of NDE in Oyo State, Mrs Olayemi Olayinka, said the directorate believes in the dynamics of capacity building of unemployed youths and making them employable.

Olayinka said NDE in Oyo State was constantly fulfilling its mandate “not only by generating employment among the rank and file of unemployed youths in the state but also gives qualitative training to those who are interested in vocational training.”

She disclosed that 990 youths across the 33 local government areas of Oyo state would be trained for three months in their chosen trades.

According to her, among the trades are Tiling, Computer Appreciation and Maintenance, Make-Up Artistry, Hairdressing, Fashion Designing and Electrical Installations.

She urged the beneficiaries to take the training very seriously and study all aspects of the training package.

Olayinka also implored the master trainers to diligently transfer the required skills to the beneficiaries of the programme by ensuring the delivery of high-quality training they were known for.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), an undergraduate of the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, Emmanuel Oluwaleye, commended the Federal Government for giving priority to eradicating unemployment.

Oluwaleye, who was among the beneficiaries of the vocational training, urged government through the NDE to continue organising such training so that the scourge of unemployment would be reduced.

The NDE South West Director, Mrs Awulatu Shafaru, represented by Christy Olowogbemi, was among dignitaries at the programme.
