NCC: Why We Can’t Guarantee Safety On Electronic Transmission Of Results
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has explained to the House of Representative members on why it cannot guarantee total safety for the electronic transmission of electoral results.
This is following the controversy that ensued in the senate on Thursday, over the inclusion of electronic transmission of results in the Electoral Act Amendment.
Appearing before the Representatives on Friday, July 16, the Executive Commissioner of the NCC, Adeleke Adewolu told the lawmakers that the Commission cannot assure Nigerians of 100% safety as no system is absolutely free from hackers.
Further in his explanation, Adewolu pointed that election results can only be transmitted through a 3G network, however, 50 percent of Nigeria’s populace has 3G coverage.
He stated that for areas without 3G coverage, poll results can be recorded and uploaded later from areas with good network coverage, but this cannot be compared with the real-time upload, he said.
