… Former Army Chief, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd.), says the FCT Minister’s alleged confrontation with a uniformed officer in Abuja is a “dangerous assault on military discipline and national order.”
Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd.), has come down hard on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over his alleged verbal altercation with a serving military officer in Abuja, describing it as a direct threat to national security and an insult to the authority of the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Tinubu.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday, the ex-Army Chief condemned the incident which reportedly occurred on November 11, saying that no public official — regardless of position — has the right to confront or humiliate a uniformed officer representing the Nigerian state.
“A minister’s verbal assault on a military officer is an act of profound indiscipline that strikes at the core of our nation’s command and control structure,” Buratai warned.
“It undermines constituted authority and threatens national order.”
Buratai stressed that such behavior, if unchecked, could weaken military morale, distort the chain of command, and send dangerous signals to subordinates within the Armed Forces.
According to him, the Armed Forces of Nigeria thrive on hierarchy, discipline, and respect for uniform — values that must not be compromised for political showmanship.
He further cautioned that the altercation “should not be dismissed as political theatrics,” reminding public office holders that the military uniform embodies the sacrifices of those who defend the nation at great personal risk.
Buratai therefore called on Wike to issue an immediate and unreserved apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Commander-in-Chief, to the Armed Forces, and to the affected officer involved in the confrontation.
“Our nation’s security must always come first. The integrity of our Armed Forces demands nothing less,” he added.
As of press time, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Office of the Minister have not released any official statement addressing the allegations.
