The Deputy Chairman, Communications Committee of the House of Representatives, Hon. Unyime Idem earlier today during Plenary of the House of Representatives presented 5 Bills standing in his name.
The Bills, adjudged to be people oriented are targeted at addressing the challenges of all Nigerians inspite of their social standing.
The Bills which are believed to improve the Socio-economic realities of Nigerians when passed and signed into Law are:
1. THE FREE INTERNET ACCESS IN PUBLIC PLACES BILL, 2020.
This Bill seeks to among other things, put in place a Legal framework for free internet access in public places, ensure the pursuit of social and developmental objectives of Nigerians for a Return On Investment, help create jobs and wealth, provide the enabling environment for SMEs to compete with global brands, assist in prompt reportage of security breaches and promote internet as a tool for personal and national development.
2. THE NATIONAL BROADCASTING COMMISSION ACT (AMENDMENT) BILL, 2020
This Bill, coming less than two days after the Lawmaker moved a Motion on the Need for DSTV and other Direct-To-Home Broadcast Satellite Service Providers in Nigeria to charge Nigerians based on service consumption and not a fixed monthly tarrif will encourage liberal, open and favorable competition in the industry, address the issue of monopoly of right to broadcast programs, regulate and review the tarrif to be on a Pay Per View basis, give the regulators the right to set the standard and modalities for broadcasting and to set tarrifs and review same.
3. NATIONAL COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHEME BILL, 2020.
This Bill seeks to make Provisions for the establishment of National Community Service Scheme, and to develop an increased sense of Social Responsibility, a global view of society and a heart for ‘Giving Back’ and helping others In Nigeria.
4. THE ENTREPRENUERSHIP EDUCATION PROMOTION BILL, 2020, another important Bill with the objective of putting in place a Legal framework for mandatory entrepreneurship education for educational institutions in Nigeria; to teach and promote entrepreneurship studies
5. THE SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE ENTERPRISES DEVELOPMENT AGENCY ACT (AMENDMENT) BILL 2020 which will empower the Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Development Agency to generate funds, train business owners and give technical support to Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in Nigeria. This bill when passed will give the needed support to sustain and grow small and medium scale enterprises in Nigeria.
Hon. Unyime Idem addressing the Press shortly after today’s Plenary said he is hopeful that the Bills when passed will not just affect the economy of Nigeria positively, but will have serious impact on the general wellbeing of Nigerians.
