“The PDP has announced that APC’s candidate, Monday Okpebholo, is disqualified from the upcoming Edo Governorship election due to allegations of a fake voter card. This revelation has sparked a significant controversy in the political landscape of Edo State.”

In a dramatic turn of events, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate for the September 21, 2024, Edo State Governorship election, Monday Okpebholo, are no longer eligible to contest the polls. This announcement follows allegations that Okpebholo presented a forged voter card.

The PDP revealed that Okpebholo’s disqualification came to light after thorough checks on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal indicated that he is not a registered voter. The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, issued a statement on Friday in Abuja detailing the alleged discrepancies.

“The alarming discovery that the APC candidate allegedly presented a fake voter card in his Form EC9 submitted to INEC is a self-inflicted blow, which clearly and irredeemably signals the end of the road for the APC and its candidate in the 2024 Edo State Governorship election,” Ologunagba stated.

He added, “It is indeed scandalous that the APC sponsored a candidate with alleged questionable documents as a governorship candidate for Edo State, a state known for its credible and highly respectable citizens. Moreover, it is now apparent why the APC submitted to INEC a blurred and unreadable voter card purporting to be that of its candidate and has remained silent since the news broke out that the said voter card is allegedly forged.”

This development has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Edo State, raising questions about the integrity of the APC’s vetting process for its candidates. The PDP’s allegations suggest that Okpebholo’s candidacy was built on fraudulent documentation, thus disqualifying him from participating in the election.

The controversy surrounding Okpebholo’s voter card has intensified as the APC has yet to issue a formal response to the PDP’s claims. Political analysts suggest that this scandal could significantly impact the APC’s prospects in the upcoming elections, as voter trust and credibility are paramount.

The PDP’s call for accountability and transparency highlights the importance of integrity in the electoral process. As the Edo State Governorship election approaches, the focus will undoubtedly remain on the fallout from these allegations and the responses from both parties.

This incident underscores the critical need for rigorous verification processes for candidates in Nigerian elections, ensuring that all participants meet the legal and ethical standards required for public office.

With the political atmosphere in Edo State heating up, all eyes are on how the APC will address these allegations and whether Okpebholo will challenge his disqualification. The resolution of this issue will play a crucial role in shaping the future political landscape of Edo State.
