The Labour Party leadership battle has taken a new turn following a landmark Supreme Court ruling. A lawyer has revealed shocking details about the judgment and its implications. What really happened in court? Who is in charge now? Read details …

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has delivered a landmark judgment that has reshaped the leadership structure of the Labour Party (LP), declaring that Julius Abure is no longer the National Chairman of the party and affirming the legitimacy of the National Caretaker Committee.

The ruling came after a prolonged legal battle that saw conflicting judgments from the lower courts. Speaking after the judgment, Barrister Chinedu Eze, legal representative of the National Caretaker Committee of the LP, clarified that the Supreme Court found that the Court of Appeal exceeded its jurisdiction when it declared Abure the National Chairman after overturning an earlier Federal High Court ruling that had recognized another faction.

According to Eze, the apex court emphasized that the leadership of a political party is an internal affair, and neither the Federal High Court nor the Court of Appeal had the jurisdiction to decide who leads the Labour Party. The judgment further stated that Abure’s tenure had expired under the party’s constitution and that the party had already constituted a Caretaker Committee to take over leadership affairs.

“By necessary implication, Julius Abure ceases to be the National Chairman of the party, having outlived his tenure under the party’s constitution. The Supreme Court made it clear that lower courts had no business interfering in the internal leadership disputes of political parties,” Eze stated.

Speaking on the ruling, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the National Secretary of the Labour Party’s Caretaker Committee, described the judgment as a victory for democracy and justice. He commended party members for their patience throughout the legal battle and called on all factions to unite in moving the party forward.

“This is a well-deserved victory. It shows that democracy works, and the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man. Labour Party is the party of the people, and this ruling confirms our legitimacy. I urge all members to remain patient and work together to strengthen the party,” Nwokocha said.

He further extended appreciation to the National Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Senator Nnedi Ousmane, other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Council (NEC), as well as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), who stood by the party during the leadership crisis.

Governor Alex Otti and other Labour Party leaders were also acknowledged for their role in maintaining party unity.

With the Supreme Court ruling settling the prolonged leadership crisis, Labour Party members are now expected to rally behind the new leadership as the party prepares for future elections. WATCH VIDEO  BELOW:
