Labour Party bounces back as Otti, Obi, Nenadi Usman and Hon. Chinasa lead NEC meeting in Abuja after Supreme Court ends Abure’s tenure.

The Labour Party took a bold step toward national political revival on Tuesday, April 9, 2025, as a powerful coalition of its leading voices gathered in Abuja to set a new course for the opposition platform—just days after the Supreme Court officially ended Julius Abure’s reign as national chairman.
The emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held at the iconic Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, was spearheaded by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, and attended by a who’s-who of the Labour Party political elite.
Notably, Hon. Ifeanyi Frank Chinasa, MBA, the National Assembly Liaison Officer (Abuja), was among those who witnessed this historic gathering firsthand. Chinasa’s presence at the high-level meeting further reinforces his rising influence within the party and underscores his pivotal role in bridging the gap between the National Assembly and Labour Party leadership. His commitment to the vision of a restructured and re-energized party was visible throughout the day’s engagements.
In attendance at the NEC meeting were:
Dr. Alex Otti – Abia State Governor
Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu – Abia State Deputy Governor
Mr. Peter Obi – 2023 Presidential Candidate
Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed – Vice Presidential Candidate
Senator Esther Nenadi Usman – National Caretaker Committee Chairman
Senator Darlington Nwokocha – Caretaker Committee Secretary
Senator Victor Umeh – Prominent Labour Party leader
Several gubernatorial candidates, party leaders, and top stakeholders nationwide.
The meeting followed the April 4 Supreme Court judgment, which validated the expulsion of Julius Abure and recognized a new Caretaker Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Otti called on members to seize the moment and rebuild the Labour Party into a viable national alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“The court has done its part. Now, it is our duty to reclaim and reposition the Labour Party as a truly people-centered political movement,” he declared.
A symbolic moment that confirmed the dawn of a new era came when the party submitted the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court judgment and the list of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)—signaling an end to Abure’s leadership and a formal transition to new party structures.
For Hon. Chinasa, the Abuja NEC was not just an internal party event—it was a strategic milestone for all progressive forces in Nigeria. As the National Assembly Liaison Officer, his role in harmonizing legislative engagement and providing policy insight will be critical to the party’s rebirth and strategic positioning in the build-up to 2027.
Political observers now believe that with a united front led by Otti, Obi, Datti, Nenadi Usman—and supported by rising tacticians like Chinasa—the Labour Party is on the path to becoming a reinvigorated political force to reckon with.
