A 22-year-old University of Benin (UNIBEN) undergraduate, Uwa Omozuwa, has died from injured sustained after four men reportedly raped her in a Redeemed Christian of Church (RCCG) auditorium in Benin, Edo State.
She was said to have visited the RCCG Edo Province 10, Ikpoba Hill Benin, last Wednesday to read before the rapists pounced on her.
The incident has created outcry on social media with many Nigerians shocked over the brutal treatment meted out to the deceased said to be a brilliant student by colleagues.
She was reportedly attacked with a fire extinguisher by the men, who raped and left her for dead.
The Nation learnt a security guard reportedly discovered her in a pool of her blood before she was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
It was gathered the Microbiology undergraduate later narrated her ordeals while on admission before succumbing to injuries on Saturday.
The case was reported at the Oregbeni Police Station, Benin.
Twitter users were outraged on Sunday, urging the police to bring her killers to book.
Trending as #JusticeforUWA, they wondered how the incident took place inside a church auditorium with no one around to rescue her.
Edo All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu said: “I am deeply saddened to learn about Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100 level student of the department of Microbiology, UNIBEN, who was the victim of a brutal rape and murder that took place on May 27th in Benin. My deepest condolences are with her family and friends #JusticeForUwa.”
Mercy Eke tweeted: “This is so heartbreaking. Broken heart how did we get here Loudly crying face #JusticeForUwa.”
@MohammedBlack_ said: “Dear @PoliceNG @ElkanaBala , while we are still mourning the death of 16 year old Tina, here is Uwa, a 22 year old lady raped and murdered in cold blood while studying inside a RCCG church in Benin city. The perpetrators are still roaming freely.”
Ozzy Etomi tweeting @ozzyetomi said:“What is the excuse now? She was in a CHURCH. Women get brutalized, raped and killed while reading in CHURCH.
“This is a societal sickness! Don’t ever let me hear you say shit to justify or exuse rape! I’m so sorry Uwa, you didn’t deserve this. #JusticeForUwa.”
