Just In: Traffic Gridlock As Students Protest Renaming Of Ibadan Polytechnic

Commuters were left stranded on Tuesday morning as angry students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, took to the streets to protest the Oyo State government’s planned renaming of the institution.

All Facts News understands that the students, who began their protest in the early hours, blocked the main gates of the institution and barricaded the ever-busy Sango, Eleyele Road, causing heavy traffic gridlock and grounding movement in parts of the Oyo State capital.

The protest follows an announcement by Governor Seyi Makinde that the school would be renamed Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, Ibadan, in honour of the former governor of old Oyo State, Dr. Omololu Olunloyo.

It is worth noting that Olunloyo, who governed the state between October and December 1983, is the first Ibadan indigene to occupy that office.

However, the students of the institution and some concerned Nigerians are not pleased with the development.

According to Daily Post, the protest also affected staff of the institution, many of whom were seen milling around the gates, unable to access their offices.

Residents and commuters using the busy road were not spared either, as long queues of vehicles stretched for kilometres amid confusion and frustration.

However, the school management had yet to issue any official statement regarding the ongoing protest as of the time of filing this report.
