Imo Speaker Chike Olemgbe has pledged support for Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu’s constitutional review consultations, emphasizing the need for reforms that benefit all Nigerians. Key areas include women’s representation, electoral laws, and local government autonomy.
The Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe, has expressed strong support for the ongoing constitutional review spearheaded by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu. This pledge came during a recent consultation meeting with Hon. Dr. Mike Ukoha, the Special Assistant to Deputy Speaker Kalu, at the Imo Assembly Complex in Owerri.
Speaker Olemgbe lauded Kalu’s proactive consultations with state Houses of Assembly, noting that the proposed amendments are crucial for addressing long-standing gaps in the Nigerian Constitution. “This process will address grey areas, such as local government autonomy and electoral reforms, ensuring a more equitable governance system for all Nigerians,” Olemgbe stated.
He further urged other state Speakers to support the initiative, emphasizing the collective responsibility of all legislative bodies in Nigeria to ensure the success of the constitutional amendment process.
Rt. Hon. Amarachi Chyna Iwuanyanwu, Deputy Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, echoed similar sentiments, commending Kalu’s commitment and reaffirming Imo State’s readiness to support the reform.
In his remarks, Hon. Dr. Mike Ukoha highlighted that the review covers critical areas such as special seats for women in Parliament, electoral reforms, and local government autonomy. “This consultation will extend across the southeast and other geopolitical zones, ensuring inclusivity and transparency in the process,” Ukoha added.
Political analysts view this move as a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive democratic system in Nigeria, with hopes that it will lead to lasting reforms that address Nigeria’s socio-political challenges.
