Police Arrested Lagos Resident. 24 Hours Later, He Wound Up De@d

Relatives and friends of Abdulmujid Oduga, a resident of the Ajah area in Lagos State, have accused the police of killing him and attempting to absolve themselves of the crime.

They found Oduga in the Epe Mortuary in Lagos on February 12, a day after he went missing. While searching for Oduga, they first visited the Ajiwe Police Post under the Ajah Police Station, and policemen referred them to the mortuary.

“The police told us they did not arrest him and said, ‘Maybe you should check the mortuary’,” Abati Akeem, Oduga’s cousin, told FIJ on Wednesday.

Akeem believes his cousin fell out with a neighbour who invited the police to arrest him. He identified this neighbour simply as Nora.

He said both neighbours had a long-running dispute and were at each other’s neck for years. Oduga, according to Akeem, once had his friends beat this neighbour and her two siblings over a clothesline issue.

“She used to spread her underwear on his portion of the clothesline, and he took offence,” Akeem told the press.

“Some five or six months ago, he took matters into his hands and threw the clothesline away with her washed clothes.

“This led to a fight, and he called his friends for help. These friends arrived and beat up the three siblings. The neighbour went to Ajiwe to report the matter, and Oduga paid N400,000 to the siblings for harassing them.”

Akeem went further to say another clash happened on February 11. He said his cousin fought this neighbour and her boyfriend, the police arrived, and Oduga was never seen again.

The press checked Instagram for Nora’s account, but at press time, the page could not be found.

Press sent details of this matter to the Police Complaints Response Unit (CRU) on February 16, and they promised to probe the station for details. On Monday, they said they had no official update on the matter yet.
