How Nigerian Judiciary's Integrity Is Threatened by Few, Says CJN Kekere-Ekun

Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has voiced concerns over the actions of a few judges, which she says are damaging the judiciary’s reputation. Speaking at a Lagos event, she highlighted the importance of ethics, morality, and alignment with public principles in law.

Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has expressed concerns over how the actions of a few judges are tarnishing the judiciary’s reputation, despite many esteemed, courageous, and diligent judges working in Nigeria. Addressing a recent public discourse in Lagos themed “Ethics, Morality, and the Law,” Kekere-Ekun acknowledged the strong clamor among Nigerians, who have raised concerns about perceived injustices and inconsistencies within the judiciary.

Kekere-Ekun emphasized the need for self-accountability among judges, asserting that individual integrity is paramount in preserving the judiciary’s image. She noted that public trust in the judiciary relies on judges upholding clarity, stability, and fairness. Her speech highlighted that the public’s acceptance of the law depends on its alignment with society’s moral values, stressing the judiciary’s responsibility to exercise authority fairly.

In a message to all legal practitioners, Kekere-Ekun pointed to the crucial role of lawyers as advocates of both legal and moral principles. She emphasized that lawyers must balance ethical standards with societal expectations, navigating a complex intersection of law and morality. “As ministers in the temple of justice, lawyers have a duty to uphold legal standards while advancing principles that reflect ethical expectations,” she stated.

She also congratulated Justice Habib Adewale Abiru on his recent elevation to the Supreme Court, describing it as a recognition of his dedication to justice. In light of growing public dissatisfaction, Kekere-Ekun urged judges to remember that they are accountable to themselves, society, and ultimately to God.

This discussion on ethics and morality in law comes at a critical time, as Nigerian citizens continue to demand reforms and accountability within the judicial system. Public discourse has increasingly focused on ensuring that justice aligns with fairness, transparency, and morality.
