Nigerians are suffering – Gen. Abdulsalami Raises Alarm: PROFFERS SOLUTION

The National Peace Committee revealed it faced significant pressure to halt the collation of results during the 2023 Presidential Election. Despite calls for intervention, the committee maintained its moral stance, emphasizing that it has no mandate to interfere with INEC’s constitutional duties.

The National Peace Committee (NPC), led by former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has revealed the intense pressure it faced during the 2023 Presidential Election. In its 106-page report, “Nigeria’s Pursuit of Electoral Compliance: National Peace Committee 2023 General Elections Report,” the committee disclosed how it was inundated with petitions demanding it intervene in the election process by halting the collation of results or canceling the election altogether.

According to the report, the NPC’s leadership, including General Abubakar and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, were bombarded with phone calls and petitions urging them to pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to act. The criticisms focused on alleged violations of the Electoral Act, with particular attention on the 25% vote threshold requirement for Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which some analysts believed should impact the final election results.

The NPC, however, clarified that its role is strictly moral and not constitutional. While the committee works to promote peace and encourage parties to uphold the law, it does not have the power to interfere in INEC’s duties or enforce compliance. Despite this, the NPC has continued to engage with political stakeholders and civil society groups to maintain peace in the post-election period.

The report also highlighted the public’s misunderstanding of the NPC’s role, with some questioning the significance of its engagement when its powers are limited to moral persuasion rather than legal enforcement. The NPC remains focused on providing moral interventions to prevent violence and encourage peaceful electoral processes.

The committee’s efforts continue as it monitors political developments and works with various groups to ensure stability across the nation.
