…. Police Begin Investigation into Deadly Blast as Victims Receive Treatment at Teaching Hospital
A tragic bomb explosion has rocked the Eastern Bypass area of Kano State, leaving five people dead and 15 others severely injured. The deadly incident occurred on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at a local scrap collection facility where unsuspecting workers were handling a vehicle reportedly brought in from Yobe State.
According to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, the explosion was caused by a military-grade explosive device concealed inside a truck believed to have originated from Yobe. The police chief said the vehicle was offloading scrap materials at the site when the blast erupted, causing panic and widespread destruction.
What We Know So Far
In a press briefing shortly after visiting the scene, CP Bakori confirmed that the police received an emergency call about the explosion. Upon arrival, bomb experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit identified the device as a “military model bomb,” indicating that the explosive was highly sophisticated and lethal.
“The explosion was traced to a military EOD ordnance. It was a military model bomb that exploded. We were informed that the vehicle came from Yobe state, and the matter is under investigation,” CP Bakori disclosed.
Casualties and Response
Emergency responders immediately rushed the 15 injured victims to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where five individuals were later confirmed dead. The remaining 10 victims are currently undergoing intensive medical care.
The scene has since been cordoned off by security operatives, while forensic teams continue combing through the debris for further evidence.
Suspicion and Ongoing Investigation
Although the origin of the military-grade explosive is still unclear, CP Bakori noted that preliminary reports suggest the truck that brought in the scrap materials was transporting the hidden device from Yobe State. The full circumstances surrounding the movement and handling of the explosive are now the subject of an active and high-level police investigation.
“We will provide more details as soon as investigations are concluded. But for now, we urge the public to stay calm and cooperate with the security agencies,” CP Bakori added.
Security experts and residents alike are now calling for increased vigilance and more robust regulatory oversight of scrap collection and recycling businesses, especially those sourcing materials from conflict-prone areas.
