The political landscape of Bende Local Government Area witnessed a historic realignment on Saturday as the entire structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Itumbauzo Ward collapsed into the Labour Party and the Abia Arise Movement, in what observers described as one of the most significant political shifts since 2023.
Leading the wave of defections, Hon. Iheanyi Frank Chinasa, Chief Liaison Officer of Abia State, said the development was a direct reflection of the transformative leadership and people-centered governance of Governor Alex Chioma Otti.
Speaking at the event held at Ndiwo Primary School Field, Chinasa declared that the era of deceit and stagnation was over, emphasizing that “Abians have now seen the clear difference between rhetoric and real governance.”
“The transformation sweeping through Abia under Governor Otti’s leadership has resonated powerfully, signaling a new dawn in the political landscape of Bende,” Chinasa told a cheering crowd of supporters.
The occasion attracted key government officials and Labour Party leaders, including the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Barr. Chijioke Nwankwo, the Mayor of Bende LGA, Deacon Uwabunkonye Bassey, and the Deputy Mayor, Hon. Mrs. Ngozi Anya, who jointly welcomed the defectors.
At the center of the defection was Hon. Chibuzo Ndom, a former Commissioner for Boundary Matters, who led over 1,000 PDP members to officially join the Labour Party. He described Governor Otti’s leadership as “transparent, accountable, and transformational,” adding that the people of Itumbauzo could no longer deny the visible progress in Abia State.
“For the first time in decades, Itumbauzo is witnessing true development. We can no longer pretend not to see the difference Dr. Otti has made,” Hon. Ndom said.
Hon. Chinasa, in his address, praised Governor Otti for restoring faith in governance and bridging the gap between leadership and the grassroots. He assured the new Labour Party members that the Otti administration would sustain its development focus across all wards in Bende.
Political watchers say the collapse of PDP structures in Itumbauzo represents a symbolic victory for the Labour Party and a reaffirmation of Governor Otti’s widening influence in Abia’s political landscape.
The event concluded with jubilant chants from new party members, pledging total loyalty to the Labour Party, the Abia Arise Movement, and the vision of Governor Alex Otti for a new, prosperous Abia State.
