In what is now one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent memory, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed that 115 bodies have been recovered from the flood that struck two communities in Mokwa Local Government Area.
The communities of Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa were hit by a deadly flood on Thursday, leaving destruction in its wake and claiming dozens of lives. Initial figures circulating online had underestimated the death toll, prompting clarification from emergency authorities.
In a statement made available to journalists on behalf of the agency’s Director General, Ibrahim Baba Arah, the Public Relations Officer of NSEMA, Ibrahim Hussaini, said search and rescue efforts remain ongoing but have so far resulted in the recovery of 115 bodies.
“Contrary to what is on social media, we have recovered 115 bodies. The search and rescue operation is still ongoing,” he confirmed.
The tragic event has sent shockwaves across Niger State and beyond, with sympathies pouring in from across the country as many continue to hope for survivors or recovery of the missing.
According to emergency responders, the floodwaters swept through homes in the two densely populated communities, giving residents little time to evacuate. The force of the water submerged structures, washed away livestock, and left families searching for missing loved ones amid the rubble.
While the state government has not yet issued an official disaster declaration, local officials are reportedly coordinating relief efforts and collaborating with NSEMA to provide temporary shelter, food, and medical aid to displaced persons.
Authorities say the cause of the flood may be linked to prolonged heavy rainfall that caused the River Niger to overflow its banks, but more assessments are ongoing to determine the precise triggers and to prevent future occurrences.
Residents of the affected areas are calling on both state and federal governments to act quickly to rebuild their communities, provide support to bereaved families, and invest in long-term flood control infrastructure.
As the search continues, emergency responders are urging residents of surrounding communities to remain vigilant and report any signs of rising water levels, especially with forecasts indicating further rainfall.
