Here’s Why Diaspora Nigerians Must Obtain BVN Before Year-End – CBN’s Yemi Cardoso Explains

CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso has unveiled a new initiative allowing Diaspora Nigerians to obtain Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) by the end of the year. The move aims to ease financial transactions, boost remittances, and enhance the economic involvement of Nigerians living abroad.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has unveiled a strategic initiative to enable Nigerians living in the Diaspora to obtain Bank Verification Numbers (BVN) by the end of this year, a move that promises to deepen their involvement in the Nigerian economy.

CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso, made the announcement during a meeting with the Nigerian community in Washington, D.C., this afternoon. Cardoso emphasized that the initiative, spearheaded by the Nigerian Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), will not only boost Diaspora remittances but also help Nigerians abroad better integrate into financial activities in their home country.

“As far as we are concerned, it is totally unacceptable that you should be out here and be having hassles in operating your accounts or doing business in your original country,” Cardoso said, expressing the CBN’s commitment to resolving these challenges.

This development aligns with ongoing monetary policy reforms and economic recovery efforts by the Nigerian government. The CBN’s new BVN initiative is designed to simplify banking and business operations for Nigerians abroad, ensuring that they can seamlessly access financial services in Nigeria.

Additionally, Cardoso met with international investors to discuss the country’s economic reforms. He urged them to seize the attractive investment opportunities in Nigeria, highlighting the favorable economic environment created by recent policy changes.

With the BVN initiative set to be implemented before the end of the year, many Nigerians abroad are expected to find it easier to engage in financial transactions, contributing to a surge in remittances and further bolstering Nigeria’s economy.
