Gregory University Uturu Launches Planting Campaign of Over 1,000 Trees

As a result of the need to reverse the negative effect of climatic changes in the environment. Gregory University Uturu would kick off a tree planting operation. The target of the university is to plant over 1000 trees in and around the university environment.

 

In a press release made available to AFNEWS by the The Vice Chancellor of Gregory University Uturu, Prof Augustine Uwakwe while flagging off the tree planting operation. The VC” highlighted the strategic importance of a smart green campus.”

He pointed out that “the aim is to provide an eco-friendly environment that stimulates knowledge assimilation while also enhancing the aesthetic beauty of the campus.”

 

The exercise which is being executed under the the West African Green Energy Development Institute (WAGEDI) of the university is tagged ” ‘GUU Green Project Initiative”

According to Prof Uwakwe, during the exercise,” members of university community are expected to plant more than one thousand exotic trees, which are currently being nursed by the horticultural unit.”

 

Also at the flag off ceremony the Executive Director of GUU-WAGEDI, Prof Chidi Onuoha, stated that” tree planting has been recognised as effective in reversing the negative effects of Climate Change, stressing that trees provide shelter for wildlife, thereby promoting wildlife conservation. ”

Furthermore “Trees are effective in erosion prevention,control and are critical in improving the quality of oxygen in the atmosphere, thereby cushioning the effects of hot weather. All these factors play important roles in promoting a serene atmosphere for learning on campus”. He concluded
