Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has taken a significant step towards fortifying security in the state by signing into law the newly amended Abia State Security Trust Fund Bill.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Governor Otti emphasized that the law empowers the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Security Trust Fund to take decisive action in ensuring a well-funded and efficient security system in Abia. He noted that prior to the establishment of the Trust Fund, the state government and well-meaning individuals had been the primary sources of security funding. However, the new law institutionalizes and streamlines financial contributions for security enhancement.
“As we sign this bill into law, I have no doubt that having given you (BoT members) the teeth, you can now bite. Most of the funding for security initiatives in the state has come from the government and generous individuals. With the establishment of this Trust Fund, we now have a structured and institutionalized approach to funding security,” Governor Otti stated.
The Governor called on Abia residents and stakeholders to continue supporting security efforts, which have contributed to the relative peace enjoyed in the state. He reiterated that security remains a top priority for his administration and assured citizens that his government will continue to invest in measures to protect lives and property.
Governor Otti also commended the Abia State House of Assembly for its proactive role in amending the law to meet evolving security needs. He acknowledged the dedication of the Security Trust Fund Board of Trustees, thanking them for their commitment to the state’s security.
“From my understanding, there was an existing law, but it was inadequate in addressing our present-day security challenges. We identified the gaps, worked with the House of Assembly to amend the law, and today, I am pleased to sign it into effect. I extend my appreciation to the Speaker, the House members, and the Trust Fund Board for their unwavering support,” he added.
State Lawmakers and Security Officials Express Confidence in the New Law
Presenting the bill on behalf of the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Augustine Meregini, stated that the primary objective of the Abia State Security Trust Fund Law No. 5 of 2024 is to establish a reliable financial mechanism for acquiring modern security equipment and ensuring the smooth operation of security agencies in the state. He expressed confidence that the law’s implementation would significantly improve security in Abia.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Abia State Security Trust Fund, Mr. Obiamaraije Stanley, speaking on behalf of the members, lauded Governor Otti for his unwavering support and assured that the Board would remain committed to ensuring the success of the initiative.
Also present at the signing ceremony were the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, and other senior government officials.
