Protesters Block Key East West Road in Rivers State Over Economic Hardship | Demand Government Action
Some protesters have stormed the Eleme/Onne section of the East/West Road of Rivers State to register their displeasure over the economic hardship experienced across Nigeria.
Occupying the popular section of the road connecting the Port Harcourt refineries, the angry protesters disrupted vehicular movement in the area.
They expressed their dissatisfaction over the incessant hunger, poverty and high cost of food items in the country while stating that the government at all levels have failed to address the needs of the people.
The protesters also said that they were not satisfied with the Federal Government’s appeal for the people to call off the nationwide protest.
One of the protesters, Wilson Idah, said they chose to occupy that particular section of the road due to its viable business potential.
He said, “We need the government to revive the refineries, which have so much employment and empowerment opportunities for us.
“In spite of the huge economic potentials in the business area, we are unemployed, hungry and poor, we are not taking any palliatives from politicians.
“We need jobs, good roads, affordable electricity, and basic infrastructure,” Idah said.
