The Senate moves closer to establishing the Federal University of Agriculture, Kura, a transformative step in Nigeria’s agricultural sector championed by Senator Ibrahim Hanga to drive food security, rural employment, and economic growth.
In a move poised to transform Nigeria’s agricultural sector, Senator Ibrahim Hanga, Deputy Minority Whip and Senator representing Kano Central, has advocated for the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture in Kura, Kano State. The senator believes that this university will significantly bolster the federal government’s agricultural policy by enhancing food production, agricultural education, and rural employment.
Speaking with journalists after his bill titled “A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal University of Agriculture, Kura” passed its second reading in the Senate, Hanga emphasized the necessity for multiple agricultural universities across the country. He highlighted Nigeria’s booming population and the critical need for local food production as the primary drivers behind this initiative.
In leading the debate, Hanga noted that agriculture remains the largest provider of livelihoods in rural areas and could substantially boost Nigeria’s GDP. He remarked, “With the rising demand for agricultural products due to population growth, income increases, and industrial needs, the Federal University of Agriculture, Kura, will serve as a cornerstone for agricultural advancement.”
The senator further detailed how the university would contribute to agricultural research, skill acquisition, and knowledge development. “This institution will produce graduates capable of addressing the challenges in agriculture, engineering, and allied disciplines, ensuring that agriculture remains a viable economic pillar,” he said.
Senator Hanga stressed that Kura, known as Kano’s agricultural hub, is strategically positioned to host this institution. He described the university’s establishment as a catalyst for regional development, fostering collaboration across neighboring states such as Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Kaduna, with a ripple effect on Nigeria and West Africa.
The senator outlined key objectives of the proposed university, which include offering diverse academic programs, fostering innovation in agricultural practices, and acting as a catalyst for natural resource conservation and economic development.
The bill also aims to support farmers’ incomes, generate employment, and contribute to Nigeria’s scientific transformation in agriculture. With this bill, Hanga envisions a future where agriculture drives sustainable development and restores citizens’ sense of belonging through enhanced federal presence in rural areas.
The proposed institution aligns with the federal government’s long-term goals to transform Nigeria into a global agricultural powerhouse while addressing the educational and professional needs of its citizens.
