Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has harshly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s purchase of a 14-year-old aircraft for presidential use, labeling the decision as “profligacy” and questioning the administration’s priorities amid economic challenges.
Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has taken a bold stance against President Bola Tinubu‘s decision to acquire a 14-year-old aircraft for use as a presidential jet, labeling it as an act of “profligacy.” The outspoken advocate for good governance made her views known on Wednesday, using her social media platform to challenge the rationale behind the purchase.
Ezekwesili, who served as a minister and later became a prominent public commentator, expressed her dismay over the acquisition of the aging Airbus, stating that no reasonable argument could justify such an extravagant expenditure, especially in the face of Nigeria’s economic challenges.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Ezekwesili did not mince words: “No argument justifies the purchase of a 14-year-old Airbus plane by the @NGRPresident @officialABAT for his indulgence. No argument that can persuade reasonable people justifies this latest profligacy.”
She further emphasized the growing discontent among Nigerians, pointing out that the decision reflects a self-indulgent lifestyle at the expense of the nation’s citizens. Ezekwesili warned that the continued disregard for the welfare of the people could eventually lead to a breaking point, stating, “Continue with your obscene indulgence until the Day your hungry citizens can no longer bear to sleep on their empty stomachs.”
The former minister also hinted at the controversial nature of the 2023 presidential election, suggesting that the actions of the current administration are a clear indication of the motives behind the election’s outcome: “I hope it is now evident to all eyes why they needed to ‘grab it… snatch it… and run away with it.'”
Ezekwesili’s sharp criticism has resonated with many Nigerians, further fueling the ongoing debate over the priorities of the Tinubu administration amid widespread economic hardships.
