The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has described extortion in airports by officials as embarrassing.
Videos trended on social media showing some airport officials extorting passengers at the terminal. The videos raised questions and reactions.
The FAAN Managing Director, Captain. Rabiu Yaduda while speaking to newsmen in Abuja on Monday, November 8 after an emergency meeting said defaulters will be sacked and barred from working in any airport terminal be it government or private owned.
“Recently, we had videos showing the acts of indiscipline and extortion at our airports. They are embarrassing to FAAN, the aviation industry, and Nigeria. So we had a management meeting comprising all FAAN airport managers, with the special Adviser to the President on Ease of Doing Business,” Capt. Yaduda said.
He added that FAAN will write to all operators informing them of the decision and punishment.
“They will inform them that any violation or acts of indiscipline, recorded or caught, FAAN will escalate. We will write to their companies and any violator will lose his or her On Duty Card (ODC) permanently, which means you will lose your access card into the airport terminal permanently.”
He called on travelers to report acts of indiscipline at the airports to the appropriate authorities.
