The former Minority Leader of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Chijioke Chukwu, has strongly criticized the appointment of Hon. Nnanna Uzor Kalu, the younger brother of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, into the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC).
Chukwu, who spoke in an interview with Flo FM 94.9, described the move as yet another example of Orji Kalu’s well-documented history of nepotism prioritizing his family’s interests over his constituents and loyal political associates.
According to him, the appointment of members into the National Assembly Service Commission is an exclusive right of principal officers from each geopolitical zone, meaning it could not have happened without the approval of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.
Chukwu revealed that Senator Kalu relentlessly lobbied top officials in the National Assembly, including the Deputy Speaker, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Senate President, to demand a political concession for himself. His agitation, according to Chukwu, was because he felt sidelined in appointments within the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), where he had allegedly pushed for his other younger brother, Mascot Uzor Kalu, to be made the Executive Director (Finance).
Hon. Chukwu accused Orji Uzor Kalu of always placing his family first at the expense of his loyalists and the larger political structure in Abia North.
“Instead of using the opportunity to reward one of his loyal supporters from another local government in Abia North and give them a sense of belonging, he chose to hoard the position within his immediate family. This is Orji Kalu’s mindset—power must stay in his family before he thinks of anyone else,” Chukwu lamented.
He expressed disappointment that many loyalists who have served Kalu for decades continue to be sidelined, despite their contributions to his political rise.
Chukwu further urged political stakeholders to be cautious about aligning with leaders like Orji Kalu, whom he accused of nepotism, monopolizing appointments and neglecting loyal supporters.
“If you want to go far in politics, follow leaders with an impeccable reward system. Orji Kalu’s style is clear—his family comes first, and others remain spectators,” he advised.
The controversy surrounding Nnanna Uzor Kalu’s appointment has sparked debates on nepotism, favoritism, and political entitlement within Abia’s leadership structure, raising fresh concerns over the Senator’s commitment to equitable representation.
