The United States government says it is expectant that the Lagos State and the Federal Government of Nigeria, will address the abuses and grievances of victims and families of #EndSARS protest.
This is on the heel of the report submitted by the Lagos state judicial panel of inquiry on Restitution for victims of SARS-related abuses and other matters.
The panel in its report handed over to the Lagos state governor, Sanwo Olu, affirmed that operatives of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Police Force, shot and killed unarmed protest at the Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.
Reacting to the report, the US Mission, Nigeria said the conclusion of the panel’s inquiry which lasted over a year, is welcomed.
The US added that the Lagos government’s response to the report is a part of a process that represents an important mechanism of accountability as regards to the 2020 protest.
“The United States welcomes the conclusion of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry with the transmission of its final report. We look forward to the Lagos State government’s response as part of a process that represents an important mechanism of accountability regarding the #EndSARS protests and the events that took place near the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020. Those events led to serious allegations against some members of the security forces, and we look forward to the Lagos State and federal governments taking suitable measures to address those alleged abuses as well as the grievances of the victims and their families” the US wrote.
