BREAKING: Electoral Act Amendment Bill Passes Second Reading | READ MORE

A bill seeking an amendment to the Electoral Act on Wednesday, passed for second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives.

The Bill titled “A Bill for an Act to amend the Electoral Act, 2022 and for Related Matters,” was sponsored by the member representing Ughelli North/Ughelli South/Udu Federal Constituency, Delta State, Mr Francis Waive.

The bill seeks for the general elections to be conducted on the same day to save money and time for the country as well as prevent the bandwagon effect.

It also seeks to make electronic transmission of results compulsory and punish persons who file frivolous petitions with heavy fines to reduce the number of cases that would end up in court.

Presenting the Bill, Waive lamented the gaps in the Electoral Act 2022, noting that an amendment of the law to pave the way “for the electronic transmission of results would help the nation’s democracy”.

The Rep member also called for the review of the voter register every ten years.

“A review of the voter register every 10 years will be a good starting point,” he stated.
