Eddie Howe Under Pressure as Newcastle Face Summer Exodus and Uncertain Future
Newcastle are unlikely to secure Champions League football for next season, which may prompt a player exodus this summer.
Eddie Howe’s long-term Newcastle future is in doubt owing to uncertainty both on and off the pitch, reports the Daily Mail.
The Magpies are enduring a sub-par campaign and they find themselves in 12th heading into the final stretch.
Newcastle crashed to a 2-1 home defeat to rivals Sunderland last time out, a result that impacts their European push.
While a Champions League finish is unlikely, Newcastle remain just six points off the top six with seven games to play.
Tonali linked with summer exit
However, a lack of Champions League action next season owing to a poor domestic campaign and an 8-3 aggregate round-of-16 exit to Barcelona means a number of star players are expected to leave St. James’ Park this summer.
Sandro Tonali was linked with a deadline day move to Arsenal, though the transfer failed to come to fruition.
Even so, Tonali is being courted by a number of European giants, with the Gunners, Manchester City and La Liga outfit Real Madrid all keeping tabs on the Italy international.
Guimaraes, Gordon among those who may also leave
The former AC Milan man isn’t the only Newcastle player who has been linked with a summer exit, with captain Bruno Guimaraes among those that may leave later this year.
The Brazilian is reportedly on Manchester United’s radar, while Real Madrid have also been credited with an interest in Guimaraes.
Nick Woltemade, Anthony Gordon and Malick Thiaw are also in demand ahead of the summer window.
And with a number of star players linked with a summer exit, Howe finds himself under pressure.
Howe faces crunch run-in
The 48-year-old now has just seven games to save his job at St. James’ Park.
Newcastle return to domestic duties with a trip to Crystal Palace before they return home later this month with the welcome of Bournemouth.
Howe’s side then face Arsenal, Brighton, Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Fulham to see out the campaign.
