The DSS has issued a warning regarding planned protests in Nigeria, highlighting political motives and potential violence. The advisory urges citizens to engage peacefully and avoid actions that could lead to chaos and destruction.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has raised concerns over upcoming protests planned in various parts of Nigeria, cautioning that while peaceful protests are a democratic right, there are indications of a sinister plan to infiltrate these demonstrations to incite chaos and extreme violence.
In a press release issued on July 25, 2024, and signed by Dr. Peter Afunanya, Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications, DSS, the agency revealed that it has confirmed intentions by some elements to exploit the protests for political gains. According to DSS, the plotters aim to use the ensuing violence to discredit both federal and sub-national governments, ultimately seeking to provoke a regime change.
“The Service has confirmed a sinister plan by some elements to infiltrate the protest and use it to cause chaos and extreme violence in the land,” the statement read. “The long-term objective is to achieve a regime change, especially at the Centre.”
The DSS has identified the funding lines, sponsors, and collaborators behind the plot, but has opted for non-aggressive measures to address the situation. The agency has employed various conflict resolution strategies, including moral persuasion, stakeholder engagement, and diplomatic efforts, to deter the planners from carrying out their undesirable objectives.
In its advisory, the DSS warns all protest groups to refrain from any form of rage, anarchy, and destruction. The Service urges prospective protesters to listen to the voice of reason and engage peacefully with the authorities. “Violence begets destruction of lives and property and serves as a distraction to governance,” the DSS cautioned.
The DSS further calls upon various sectors of society, including leaders of thought, captains of industry, labor unions, student associations, youth leaders, civil society, clergy, NGOs, women groups, civil servants, and politicians, to reject any invitation to partake in orchestrated violence. Parents, guardians, and heads of traditional and academic institutions are also advised to counsel their children, wards, and students against participating in the planned protests.
“Let us all join hands to build a Nation without rancor, bitterness, or stained banners,” the statement emphasized.
The DSS reassured the public that it will collaborate with other security and law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and will apply all legitimate methods necessary to ensure safety and order. The agency also provided contact information for the public to report any concerns or seek further information, including their website (http://dss.gov.ng), email (dsspr@dss.gov.ng), and telephone lines (+2349153391309, +2349088373514).
