Diogo Costa on Man City radar amid awkward Ederson uncertainty
Man City have an interesting summer lined up for their goalkeeping department as Ederson continues to be linked with an exit
Manchester City could move for at least one new goalkeeper this summer amid uncertainty over all three on their books. Ederson, Stefan Ortega, and Scott Carson have been the established trio for the last three seasons, yet there are doubts over their futures.
Carson has been on City’s books since 2019 and has been a big presence in the dressing room, even if he has only started one match in his time under Pep Guardiola – and that came after the Blues had already won the league in 2021. He is on a rolling one-year deal and will turn 40 in September so a decision will have to be made on whether he is still the right fit for third-choice keeper.
Ortega signed a new deal last summer after his title-winning save from Son Heung-min sent his stock to the highest they have been at City. He has since made squads for the German national team but has failed to seize the No.1 spot at the Etihad this season when he has been given runs in the team.
With his contract running out next season, this summer is the last where City can get a fee for him and there has already been mention of a few German clubs who are willing to make him their No.1 to bring him back to the Bundesliga.
Ederson is the big one though. The Brazilian usurped Claudio Bravo as Guardiola’s main keeper from the moment he arrived in 2017 as a relatively unknown stopper, and has changed the game in eight successful years.
His ability to keep goals out and command his area has never been his strongest point, but what he adds to the City team is unrivalled – as are the assists he has managed in the Premier League, with four alone this season. Despite a number of absences over the last two years, he is still City’s best choice.
The 31-year-old nearly left last summer though with a number of Saudi Arabian clubs interested, requiring last-ditch talks from Guardiola to persuade him to stay. A move is again being mooted for the end of this season with his contract also expiring in 2026, and there was an unconvincing answer from the manager when asked about that in a press conference last week before an .
“I don’t want to speak about his situation right now, about the possible personal situations,” he said. “We are really pleased for the victory in the last game but we cannot forget that with the game our contenders have in hand we can be fifth in the table.
“We still have many important games to play and a semi-final so I’m not going to talk about any personal situations right now. We have time for every single situation. They deserve to be dealt with how they want in the right moment.
“Now is not the right moment. Maybe internally – the players can do whatever they want – but here is not the time.”
If there is no announcement imminent on any goalkeepers, the club still have to be looking at the market because of the uncertainty they face with all three of their players. Porto’s Diogo Costa has been linked with the club, and it is not hard to see how he has ended up on their radar given City’s Portuguese connections that started long before sporting director Hugo Viana started his new gig.
Costa will be one of the targets sized up if Ederson does decide to go, but it could be a busy summer for City and their goalkeeping department given the changes that may come.
