President Muhamadu Buhari on Tuesday told his counterpart from the Republic of Benin, Patrice Talon that good neighbourliness is critical in the survival and development of countries around the world.

As previously reported , President Talon on Tuesday, visited President Buhari of Nigeria at the Aso Rock villa in Abuja.

The two leaders held a private meeting after the Beninese leader arrived at the forecourt of the presidential villa at 11.09 a.m. and was received by President Buhari.

Revealing details of what was discussed, the Special Adviser to Buhari (Media and Publicity), Femi Adesina disclosed in a statement that while playing host to the Benin leader, President Buhari said “Good neighbourliness is very important in our lives. The survival of your neighbour is also your own, and we will continue to work with our neighbours in the light of this understanding.”

He recalled that upon assumption of office in 2015, he visited neighbouring nations of Chad, Niger, Cameroon and Benin to strengthen ties between them and Nigeria on issues touching on security, trade and development.

“And those are issues we must continue to engage on, for the good of our countries and the people. Whatever irritations that come up must be removed,” President Buhari said.

President Talon on his part was quoted to have said he was in Nigeria to show gratitude to President Buhari for his leadership role in Africa.

He stressed that “and our relationship as neighbours must, therefore, remain cordial,” to overcome all challenges.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Femi Falana has petitioned the United Nations over Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni, illegal detention of his main opponent Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.

Museveni had recently won his re-election bid keeping him at the helm of affairs in Uganda for over 30 years.

Since the day of the election, security operatives have barricaded the home of Bobi Wine, stopping him and his family from going out and also refusing visitors to the former musician’s house.

In a statement on Tuesday, Falana stated that the former reggae artists had been denied access to his lawyers in a bid to prevent him from filing a petition against the declaration of Museveni as the winner election.

He said a complaint against the government of Uganda has been submitted to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention concerning the detention of the detained couple.
