National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said, 14 COVID-19 herbal medicines have  been listed for use in the country.

This was made known to newsmen on Thursday,  by the agency’s DG, at its headquarters in Abuja.

Prof.  Mojisola Adeyeye, shortly after receiving a first dose of the Astrazeneca Vaccine said, the agency carried out adequate study on the Covid-19 vaccine and confirmed  it safe  for use in Nigeria. She confirmed that Nigeria will be getting more supply of Astrazeneca vaccine from Russian soon.

Speaking on the fate of herbal medicines submitted to NAFDAC by traditional medicine practitioners, Adeyeye  said the agency has approved 14 of them for listing.

She said;

“We have approved about 14 COVID-19 herbal medicine for listing, meaning they are now safe for consumption but how efficacious they are is when they undergo clinical trials. The government has arranged for research and development scheme and we have a number of herbal medicines that are going to be used for clinical trials. But I will not be surprised if we have herbal medicine that has anti-viral against COVID-19”.

According to the NAFDAC DG, the Astrazeneca vaccine’s benefits outweighs its side effects. This she said  was from the record of the clinical trials conducted by the manufacturers and the analysis done by the agency.

She added that only few persons showed some allergy after taking the Astrazeneca vaccine.

She however advised that anyone who gets the vaccine jab should wait for 45 minutes for doctors’ observation before leaving the clinic.
