Constitutional Amendment: Chinedum Orji-Led Abia Assembly Commended by National Assembly

Following the successful consideration of the Constitutional Amendment Bills, Rt. Hon. Engr. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji-led 7th Abia State House of Assembly has received widespread commendations from the National Assembly.

The 7th Abia House of Assembly reached a milestone on Wednesday, 8th June 2022, becoming the first State Assembly in Nigeria to pass the Alteration of the 1999 constitution Amendment Bill into law leading to a full financial and administrative autonomy for State Legislature, Judiciary and Local Government.

The commendation came through the Special Ad-hoc Committees of the National Assembly on the review of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The commendation was conveyed in a statement signed by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, and the Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt Hon Idriss Wase, Chairman and Co-Chairman of the 9th Senate and House of Representatives Special Ad-Hoc Committee on the Review of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Singling out the Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji-led Abia State House of Assembly for commendation for being the first to successfully consider and approve the Constitution Amendment Bills, the National Assembly said it took ”cognizance of the provisions of sections 8 and 9 of the constitution which makes the State House of Assembly critical partners of the National Assembly in processing the Bills, the Abia State House of Assembly has demonstrated great courage and capacity by being the first State Assembly in the Country to do so.”
