Burkina Faso Junta Shuts Down All Political Parties To Enforce National Unity

Burkina Faso Junta Shuts Down All Political Parties To Enforce National Unity –

Burkina Faso dissolves all political parties and repeals laws governing their operation, the presidency announces Thursday. The move marks a major restructuring of the country’s political landscape following the September 2022 coup that brought junta leader Ibrahim Traore to power.

Traore presides over a council of ministers meeting where the decision is formally adopted. Émile Zerbo, minister of territorial administration and mobility, calls it a “great and important decision as part of the re-founding of the state.” According to the presidency, the country’s numerous political parties have caused political fragmentation, encouraged citizen division, and weakened the social fabric over time.

The decree aims to preserve national unity, enhance the coherence of government action, and pave the way for comprehensive political governance reforms. All property belonging to dissolved parties is to be transferred to the state. Zerbo confirms that draft laws implementing the measure will soon be submitted to the Transitional Legislative Assembly.

Prior to the coup, Burkina Faso hosts more than 100 registered political parties, with 15 represented in parliament following the 2020 general election. After Traore seizes power, parties are forced to suspend their activities, leaving the country without formal political representation under the current transitional government.

Alongside the political restructuring, the council of ministers approves a major economic and development plan known as the “Reliance Plan.” Valued at FCFA 36 trillion (approximately $65 billion), the plan outlines national development projects spanning 2026 to 2030. Officials describe the plan as essential to boosting economic growth, infrastructure development, and social welfare across the country.

Observers note that Burkina Faso’s political upheaval follows a regional trend of military-led transitions in West Africa, highlighting ongoing challenges to democracy and governance. Analysts suggest the junta’s focus on dissolving political parties and implementing a unified governance framework is aimed at consolidating authority, preventing further political fragmentation, and ensuring stability during the transitional period.

Despite international concerns about democratic backsliding, the junta frames its actions as necessary for long-term national unity and reform. Traore and his administration maintain that the restructuring of political institutions is a step toward building a more cohesive and resilient state capable of addressing economic and social challenges effectively.
