The All Progressives Congress (APC) is on the verge of securing the Edo State governorship seat as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) wraps up the collation of results from all 18 local government areas (LGAs). Senator Monday Okpebholo, the APC candidate, leads with a total of 291,667 votes, solidifying his position as the likely winner of the closely contested poll.
The results show that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo, garnered 247,274 votes, trailing behind Okpebholo. Meanwhile, Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) secured a distant third position with 18,737 votes.
Results Breakdown by LGAs:
APC performed strongly across the state, winning 11 of the 18 LGAs, while PDP took the remaining seven. The local government areas that played pivotal roles in the APC’s success include:
Ikpoba-Okha LGA:
APC – 16,338 | PDP – 26,382 | LP – 2,026
Oredo LGA:
APC – 30,780 | PDP – 24,938 | LP – 5,389

APC – 20,167 | PDP – 9,683 | LP – 604
Owan East LGA:
APC – 19,380 | PDP – 14,189 | LP – 446
Despite a strong showing from the PDP in some areas, including Ikpoba-Okha and Ovia North-East, the APC maintained its lead, buoyed by significant voter support in its strongholds.
The official declaration of the winner is still pending as INEC continues to finalize the process. However, with the majority of LGAs in the APC’s column, Okpebholo is expected to be announced as the next governor of Edo State, succeeding the outgoing Godwin Obaseki.
Election Process and Turnout
The election saw a total of 2.2 million registered voters spread across 4,519 polling units in Edo State. While the turnout was lower than expected, the results demonstrate the strong influence of APC’s campaign across multiple local governments.
The eventual winner will be responsible for steering Edo State’s governance in the coming years and inheriting the mantle from Governor Obaseki, who faced a tough re-election campaign in 2020 but will now pass the torch to his successor.
