The life and times of Ezinne Mrs Eunice Iheme (Nye Aguaja)

Mama was born on the 17th of December, 1941 to the family of Mazi Edward Alaohuru Ngele and Sarah Iroaja Alaohuru Ngele of Ndi Otudo in Ndiugbugbo, Amisisi -Acha but now in Ebonyi State. She was the third child of the Union which produced three girls and one boy and mama being the third girl and third child was popularly called BABY in her formative years and the name stuck till well after her marriage to Late Mr. Alexius Iheme (Aguaja) in 1961.

Mrs. Eunice Iheme had her primary school education at St John’s ND P school, Acha and proceeded to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Afikpo for her nursing training and later college of health technology where she trained as community health Worker, in 1989 she obtained her certificate in Community health from the Federal Ministry of health, National Community Health Practice Board.

Baby nwa Edward as she was fondly called was arguably the most beautiful girl and most wooed among her peers, her decency, carriage and elegance were unrivaled, she was strong, bold and fearless and very popular among her mates and in the Community at large.

She was attracted to her husband, Alexius Emelike Iheme popularly known as Aguaja one of the elites and leaders of thought of Acha ancient Kingdom while she was still living with her maternal uncle Paul in Amorji, Acha and they were married according to the custom and tradition of Acha and later wedded at the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Ogui, Enugu shortly after the Civil war in 1972. Their Marriage was blessed with Eight Children, three girls and five boys (Ada, Emelike, Onyekachi, Oluchi, Chinagorom, Chibuzo, Uchenna and Ikechukwu)

Mama lost two of her daughters in infancy, Ada her first daughter died before the civil war in 1962, Oluchi her second daughter died during the civil war in 1968 and lately her first son, Emelike who died in in his prime in 2016 devastated her and like a mother hen, Mama took all the battles of her children, shielding them from the vagaries of life, provided for their needs and in her mind still saw all of her children as teenagers until her death.

In her desire to ensure that her children got the best of what life can offer, Mama engaged in the retail selling of iced fish in Artisan Market, Enugu and ended up being the owner of several iced fish sheds in the market and with this she was very supportive in seeing the children through school until 1985 when she returned to the passion of her life which is nursing and midwifery a profession she enjoyed and remained in until her retirement in 2006.

She worked in Enugu Municipal medical Centre, Asata, Enugu and Medical Center, Apuoga, Nike, Enugu respectively between 1985 and 1996 and upon the indigenization act of Enugu state government she returned to Abia state and was redeployed to Acha Medical Center and later Medical Centre, Umuakwua as a Community health worker and midwife.

As a Community leader Mama was until her deployment to Abia state an active member of Acha Town Union, Women Wing Enugu branch, Oguduasaa Development League, Women Wing, Enugu branch and on returning to Abia State she joined Acha Town Union, Home branch and remained a member till her death.

Mama was conferred with the Ezinne title by the St. Martins the Porres Catholic, Acha Parish in recognition of her invaluable contribution to the development and advancement of the church and she was until her death a member of the Catholic Women Organization, Acha Parish.

Mrs. Eunice Iheme is survived by her five Children, Chief Dr. Onyekachi Iheme (Ogbuehi l’uko ehi), Mrs. Chinagorom Nduka, Mr. Chibuzor Iheme, Mr. Uchenna Iheme and Mr. Ikechukwu Iheme. Her daughters in-law include Mrs. Elizabeth Iheme, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Iheme, Mrs Chinonye Iheme, Mrs. Ngozika Iheme and Mrs. Chidi na Iheme. Mama is blessed with Nine grand children and they are Mr. Nnamdi Iheme, Mr. Chimobi Iheme, Mr. Obiajulu Nduka, Mr. Chineme Iheme, Master Chigozie Iheme. Master Chinonso Iheme, Master Chukwuemeka Iheme, Master Oluebube Iheme and Miss Chisom Iheme.

Until her death at the Crown hospital Onitsha in the evening of Wednesday, 11th December 2019 after a very brief illness while in her son, Uchenna’s house Mama has continually expressed a wish that all her children will continue to live together and be each other’s keeper, a wish the children intend to keep and pass on to the next generation. Adieu Ezinne and continue to rest in the secret place of the most high and in the bosom of Abraham. Sleep on until we meet to part no more.

Mama died at age 77 and she is billed to be buried on Tuesday 14th April 2020 in Acha, Abia State
