Umuahia, the capital of Abia State is regarded by many as the least developed state capital in south east Nigeria. A lot of persons stretch the comparison even further and will tell you that it is indeed the least developed capital city across the length and breadth of southern Nigeria.

It is a pity that Umuahia has remained a glorified village even after an Ibeku son had ruled the state as governor. The town is the dirtiest state capital in Nigeria and residents in this city inhale the foulest air anyone could imagine. The urban infrastructure in Umuahia are very obsolete where at all they exist, little wonder professionals are fleeing the town.

Just visit Isi Gate, and you would understand the viciousness of the shameless vagabonds that have vowed to perpetually victimize us.

The Umuahia Urban Planning Authority for the past 20 years has done nothing beyond marking the X sign on new buildings whenever they spring up in any part of the municipal. We all know what happens once the palms of the officials have been greased.

The average kid growing up in Umuahia today has no idea what pipe-borne water is, some of the iconic institutions in the town like Government College Umuahia, Federal Government Girls College, Ibeku High School and Holy Rosary have since lost their old glories due to mismanagement and lack of attention.

With Dr Alex Otti as governor come May 29th this year by the special grace of God, a whole lot will be significantly different. For once, we will have a governor who understands the rudiments of development and very importantly, shall be committed to changing the infrastructural landscape of the city.

Dr Alex Otti will restore the glory of Umuahia, he will introduce far-reaching reforms within the state agencies in charge of town planning and development. He will bring in experienced and smart personnel to run these agencies.

He will dig-out the original development outlay of the city and make corrections and fresh inputs to accommodate today’s realities. He will make the fixing of quality road a priority. Roads shall be built to last and shall come with rugged drainage facilities to reduce the menace of flooding and the associated environmental challenges each time it rains.

He will turn his focus to housing development. The APGA governorship candidate understands that there’s serious housing deficit in Umuahia. The Alex Otti administration will partner with housing development agencies in the public and private sectors to build world class housing facilities for the residents of Umuahia.

The state water board would be made to come alive through adequate funding and employment of competent personnel to man the operations of the agency. Umuahia should have well-developed water infrastructure and every home shall be required to have running water for better hygiene.

Dr Otti will revive moribund factories in Umuahia and partner with private agencies to build new ones. There shall be special focus on agro-processing facilities, ICT Hubs, manufacturing and industrial processing. These industrialisation initiatives shall be aimed at creating jobs, and wealth and harnessing our natural resources for development.

The Otti administration will restore the glory of the iconic schools in Umuahia and build new ones to cater for the educational needs of the residents. Additionally, skill acquisition centres shall be established in several parts of the town to train our young ones on the relevant skills they need for economic sustenance.

Within his first year in office, the governor would radically transform the capital city that it shall begin to attract young professionals who currently are fleeing the city for better opportunities elsewhere. The Otti administration will open endless portals of opportunities in Umuahia and other parts of Abia.

It is sad that Umuahia has unjustifiably become an orphan in the comity of Capital Cities, but Alex Otti is coming to audaciously change this sad narrative.

Alex Otti is Abia’s brightest that showed up when his intervention is needed most.
