The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, has commended Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for his achievements in governance, particularly in the education sector. Ohuabunwa, a former federal lawmaker and a prominent political figure in Abia, acknowledged Otti’s impact over the past 21 months and urged him to build on the momentum.
Speaking in an address, Ohuabunwa emphasized the significance of Governor Otti’s policies, particularly the allocation of 20% of the state’s annual budget to education. He described the initiative as commendable and a step in the right direction for the development of Abia State.
“We’ve seen the allocation of 20% of the annual budget to education, and we are asking him to do more,” Ohuabunwa said. “I am not here as a politician, but as the Pro-Vice Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt, an educational institution. This is a way of appreciating him and also advising him to expand his efforts in education.”
Highlighting his deep connection to Abia’s political landscape since 1999, Ohuabunwa insisted that his assessment of Governor Otti’s administration was based on verifiable facts.
“When I say something, it is difficult for anyone to contradict it. Within 21 months, I believe Dr. Alex Otti has done well. He is performing, and we are encouraging him to do even more,” he added.
The former senator also praised Otti’s track record beyond governance, citing his stellar academic background and distinguished career in the banking sector.
“I am not just saying this because he is the governor. If you look back at his school days and his academic performance, you will understand why we are proud of him,” he noted. “He distinguished himself in the banking industry, and beyond that, he maintained a strong connection with his alma mater. We are proud of him.”
Ohuabunwa further revealed plans to collaborate with Governor Alex Otti to provide greater educational opportunities for Abia students at the University of Port Harcourt.
“We want to work with him to ensure that Abia students are well represented at the University of Port Harcourt. His administration’s investment in education aligns with our mission, and we are eager to build stronger partnerships.”
