Abia Panel: How Police Demanded N1 Million For My Brother’s Releases Even After Burning Down His House | SEE DETAILS

A cosmetics dealer, Mr Udeze .A. Kalu, has alleged that a policeman with Azuka police station Aba, demanded a sum of one million naira cash to release his detained  brother.

Udeze said this in a resumed hearing today, March 24, in the case between the petitioner and Commissioner of Police Abia State, DPO Azuka police station Ogbor Hill Aba, Officer Edet (leader anti- kidnapping unit Aba Area command),  Officer Ikechukwu Egbulom (Oracle), and officer Yellow.

Recall that AF-NEWS reported that one Uchechi Agwu Kalu, a traditional doctor, was allegedly missing after he was arrested by the police.

In his witness, Udeze said he was called on phone on the said day, August 11, 2020 by his cousin Emeka Obasi, who informed him that his younger brother, Uchechi was beaten in his house by the police, and was taken away as he was bleeding.

” Emeka told me they shot dead one other person called Ndubuisi, and burnt down the house”

” I asked Emeka if he knew the policemen who took my brother, he said some of the officers he knows works at Azuka police station.

” I called my sister Elizabeth Agwu Kalu to go to Azuka police station.”

He said he travelled from his base in Umuahia to Azuka police station where he met a woman who on his inquiry, told him that Uchechi was detained by the anti-kidnapping Unit of the Station.

” The police woman directed me to one Egbulonu Ikechukwu of the unit.

” He asked me if I came with money , I told him that is not a problem that I came to know why my brother was arrested.

” He asked me to bring one million naira. I asked him what did my brother do that will warrant such amount.

” He excused himself as he wanted to see their boss. He came back with a man called  ‘ oracle’ who told me that my brother is not with them.

” I returned to Umuahia and reported to Human Rights Commission Abia chapter. The Commission wrote to the Commissioner of Police, they also took me to Azuka police station Aba, we met the DPO. The commission pleaded with him to open the cells so they can check if Uchechi was there but he refused.

” We returned to Umuahia, went to Public Complaint Commission Abia chapter led by barrister Chukwuemeka Nwaogu, the police still refused to release my brother. We also wrote to the AIG Zone 9. Since then, we have not seen Uchechi”.

Udeze made five pleas to the panel;

* To mandate the anti-kidnapping Unit Azuka police station Aba to release the corpse of Ndubuisi whom they shot dead on that day.

*N100M compensation for Ndubuisi.

* To mandate the police to release Uchechi Agwu Kalu.

* If the police cannot provide Uchechi, a compensation of N300M should be paid by the police.

* N100M compensation for his burnt house and properties including his medical equipment.

* To ensure that justice is served in the policemen who invaded Uchechi’ house.

The matter was adjourned till March 31, 2021.
